Christmas Market at Poplar Hall
WHERE: Poplar Hall,
3176 Denny Red,
Newark DE 19702
(New Castle County Delaware Vendor Fairs, Craft Shows.)
DESCRIPTION: In only its 2nd year, the Christmas Market at Poplar Hall has already grown into one of the most charming and unique holiday events in the area. Following its incredibly successful inaugural year in the 2017, we are absolutely delighted to bring it back. Greg Shelton owner and event director said, “In 2017, we introduced the market as a heritage event for families to experience a storybook Christmas. We hoped to host 300-500 people and it ended up hosting over 3000 people!”
Over 35+ local artisans are busy designing and making handcrafted gifts that will be sold in historic outbuildings on the property. The hand-hewn granary barn, stable barn, milk and smoke houses will all house designers and artists selling handmade jewelry, ornaments, pottery, fresh flower arrangements and much more. Live demonstrations from a local Blacksmiths, Colonial Woodworkers, Textile Spinners, Ukrainian egg maker will show event goers the skills needed to survive in the 18th century. The smell of Christmas will also be in the air with fresh handmade wreaths, Christmas trees and much, much more.
Also, come meet special guest Walter Staib! Celebrity chef, owner of the City Tavern Restaurant and host of the multiple Emmy Award Winning show “A Taste of History” on PBS. Chef Staib will be bringing and signing cookbooks at the event, certainly a special gift for any foodie, family member or friend!
Of course a major part of a great Christmas market is following the smell of wonderfully prepared food and drink. We’re happy to say we’ve teamed up again with James Beard Nominee and friend, Bryan Sikora (LaFia, Merchant Bar and Hearth Kitchen) to offer a mouthwatering culinary experience. Yards Brewery (from Philadelphia) will be serving their “Ales of the Revolution” series of festival brews. These beers are recreated from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin’s original recipes! Harvest Ridge Winery and Cidery will be selling wine and cider and to help make this Christmas experience an amazingly delicious one. Sweets from Three Little Bakers Immediato’s macaroons, pastries and breads from De La Coeur bakery to homemade Stroopwaffle cookies made on site.
Did we forget music? Of course we didn’t…A FREE live Christmas performance by recording artists Hotsy Totsy! Guests can experience the lively harmonies of these ladies from New Jersey, a 1950’s-style vocal trio. Enjoy all the classic Christmas tunes to help you ring in the holiday.
The British Car Club of DE will be showing a set of beautiful vintage cars, with a group of British motorcycles on display from the 50’s & 60’s. Shelton said “This market is a meant to celebrate the heritage of the house and its european roots during the Christmas holidays”.
All children are welcome to come the market and sit for a free storytelling experience from a true old world style “Father Christmas”. He’ll be reminding all of them the value of family and friends, a little history about Christmas in the 18th century, all spun in a fun holiday tale.
Join the Shelton family as we take the Christmas spirit back to where it should be, purchasing handmade gifts by our amazing local artisans (for yourself or people you love), handmade food and drinks, fresh cut Fraser fir trees, while enjoying one of the few 18th century properties still standing in Delaware. The event, is free for everyone, but a $5 parking fee for each automobile.
